  • England, Wales and other European nations will not wear the OneLove armband at the World Cup in Qatar because of the threat of players being booked.

The captains of nine countries, including England's Harry Kane and Gareth Bale of Wales, had planned to wear the armband to promote diversity and inclusion.

A joint statement from seven football associations said they could not put their players "in a position where they could face sporting sanctions".

"We are very frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented," the statement read.

"We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband.

"However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play", the statement added.

    Pablo H says:

If they were that bothered (which they probably ain’t) why just boycott it?

    Tube Rantz says:

Hit the nail on the head.

These people don’t care about the causes they claim to stand up for.

If they did they wouldn’t go the Qatar due to the racism, slavery, human trafficking, anti gay laws etc

    Nasser -Q says:

Cuz money is everything for western 😂

    Marnoch says:

Armbands are just ridiculous. Achieves nothing at all. Just a way of saying look at me caring when in fact you’re doing nothing.

    young hirsch says:

If it achieves nothing at all, how come Qatar are concerned and bans them from wearing it?

    PD Goose says:

We stand together….unless we get a yellow card…..pathetic

    Mohak Narang says:

So wearing an armband that sends a message of “love and inclusion” against their culture?
Isn’t religion meant to spread love and peace?

    StimParavane says:

God does not want people to practice homosexuality. It’s appalling that footballers are being used to promote a degenerate lifestyle.

    Ziploc says:

That’s a common misconception, religion is all about wielding power.

    Hayley Strzelecka says:

For a global event, should have decided on a more globally inclusive concept, like simply “love”. That means something to every being on the globe – context and politics unnecessary.

    Joe Xavier says:

Colonial masters who don’t have any shame for their past colonial crimes

    Terkaa Ahom says:

If your ‘solidarity’ and ‘allyship’ crumbles the moment you face a consequence… is your support meaningless?

    Dead Children Playing says:

Not meaningless, but weak and unreliable and probably not genuine 🙁

    Don XZ says:

No commitment and no balls – sad day when the corrupt FIFA officials who let this dodgy games go ahead blackmail National squads

    festungs says:

If they want to make a stand, dont play!
But just like the rest of all the hypocrites.
They are there for the MONEY!

    Pedant Patrol says:

    No-one should stand for degeneracy.

    Bizairsp says:

Anyone else think it’s time to remind FIFA they don’t own football?

    wolf 99 says:

And should I remind you that you do not own the world and that you must respect the cultures of the country and not introduce homosexuality into it?

    Joe Xavier says:

Former colonial masters should more concentrated about their past crimes…in future it will again brings more misery

    Basil Maz says:

@Joe Xavier Hate to break it to you, but the Middle East also has an imperial past through the Ottoman, Abbasid, Umayyad Empires. That means they controlled Portugal, Spain, the Balkans, the Caucuses, parts of Russia and the Ukraine, and the Middle East and North Africa. It’s not only Europeans who have a colonial past.

    Joe Xavier says:

@Basil Maz we all are know this kingdoms are now history doesn’t exist, but what about Europeans kingdoms who still enjoying all privilege and their government never asked forgiveness or payed any money to people who lost their lives during colonial times..don’t be hypocrite

    Kephinio says:

@wolf 99 Thinking this would be an introduction of homosexuality is nonsensical. I’m with you in terms of respect for other cultures (i.e. learning the language and having an interest in the culture, not being offensive etc.). But I am of the opinion that it’s not okay for cultures to make other people feel uncomfortable with who they are. Nobody should be pressured to believe they are of less value because of the colour of their skin, sexuality, (non-)religious beliefs as long as they don’t hurt anyone else. I’m sick of people saying that standing for human rights is political or propaganda.

    sgtgrash says:

If the culture of a sporting tournament clashes with the culture of the nation which desires to host it, then its right to do so should be forfeited…

    Pedant Patrol says:

So the world cup has a ghey culture now? Outta here with that drivel!

    Haidgu says:

then why is it held in a country like that?

    sensei121 says:

Yes especially if the countries who’s culture is the practice of sodomy and general debauchery want to take part in the sport… They should be banned from playing in any other country who object to that kind of behaviour… As it clashes with the morality and religious beliefs of the host country…. The supporters of sodomy should be allowed to have their own league and competitions so the sodomites can play in each other’s backyards…

    Doaa Seka says:

@Haidgu so do you think they should not only because of a big lie

    squelch079 says:

Lettuce Bacon Tomato Quinoa movement is throwing a tantrum yet again

    Anthony Thomas says:

Why don’t ALL of the players of Wales, England and the five other teams, wear the armband.
On what grounds can FIFA give a booking to any player, is there a precedent, is there a rule?
If so, those nations should be(come) aware of it.
If not, then surely their legal teams should challenge the validity of FIFA’s threats

    Muhammad Radhivan says:

    cry more

    sensei121 says:

Just go home and sulk and wave your little flags there….give back all the money and stay in the uk

    Md Ali says:

Because brother the country doesn’t allow it.
    Simple isn’t?

    Terry Rowe says:

Im really enjoying Gary Lineker’s monologues on MOTD because when I tune in to watch football I would rather hear about a country’s appalling human rights than football . Must have been an extremely difficult decision for him to go to the tournament 🙄💰💰💰

    ||||upjidasoid says:

Yes I think he was tossing and turning in bed for quite some time and then he realised he’s an 💩hole and went anyway.

    Andrew24 says:

If he feels so much about it he shouldn’t have gone or he could return the money they‘ve paid him and leave or he could just stay and report solely on the football which is what he ‘s supposed to do. My betting is he’ll keep the money, stay and still hypocritically moan to fit in with his other trendy moaning mates. Fight the cause of the lowest minority in society for a change – white, working class, heterosexual men. Job options are biased against them, education is biased against them, law is biased against them, healthcare is biased against them, but nobody wears an armband for them or takes a knee it isn’t trendy to do so and your get shouted down. Equality should be for ALL.

    Jay R says:

Damn Fifa called their bluff. You wanna be a rebel you gotta pay the price or go home. Thats the way the world works.

    Dead Children Playing says:

    I wish they did that

    K P says:

It’s just pathetic, both from FIFA and from the teams. If wearing the armband is so important to the players, they should wear it regardless of the disciplinary actions.

    -- says:

It’s funny to see a team who hasn’t won any of its last 6 matches, their manager, and Gary Lineker, so concerned with political matters rather than shutting up and concentrating on the football only. We’re back to “taking the knee” as well. Karma will bite them on the bum and England will be knocked out in early course.

    ꧁❤️𒈞God of small things𒈞❤️꧂ says:

If England and BBC really care about LGBTQ then why don’t you retrieve your teams from participating in the Qatar world cup you can do it now, 😂😂..

    Omar says:

I think a more appropriate reaction is that most saw the opening ceremony, got very emotional, realized their hypocrisy, and decided to drop the nonsense.

If we hold each other morally accountable for everything according to our world-view paradigm, we can hold the Western world (the one’s who’ve been adamant on this) over hundreds of crimes. Let’s not get carried away.

    ꧁❤️𒈞God of small things𒈞❤️꧂ says:

Imagine if England won this WORLD CUP do you boycott this world cup? 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂

    Agatha Amara says:

Yup, respect other people’s cultures. Not everyone thinks like the West. Also opens up soccer to all kinds of political expression. That’s a slippery slope no one wants to go on.

    Rafski says:

Sport has nothing to do with gender dysphoria, who are these people getting backed by? Sport is about rivalry and sportsmanship.
