Walgreens walkout pharmacy might be closed next week
Employees at two of the country’s largest drugstore chains say harsh working conditions make it challenging to fill prescriptions safely, putting customers’ health at risk. They have now staged a series of walkouts across the country to demand change.
Walgreens pharmacy employees, including pharmacists, technicians, and support staff, are planning a walkout between October 9-11, according to an organizer who asked to remain anonymous to avoid retribution from the chain. There are employees who plan to walk out for just one day, while others plan to close their pharmacies for the entire three days.
There are more than 500 Walgreens employees across the country who have expressed interest and solidarity, according to a Walgreens pharmacy employee and walkout organizer. However, fewer are likely to participate.
CVS pharmacy employees walked off the job at multiple Kansas City CVS stores last week, sparking the planned action.
Pharmacists at some Walgreens stores are taking part in the coordinated action to protest what they call burdensome prescription and vaccination expectations imposed by corporate management. The result is that employees fall behind and are faced with angry customers as a result.
According to the pharmacy worker, the company sets performance expectations based on the number of team members each pharmacy should have. Staffing, however, is much lower in reality. Meanwhile, he said, training hours for new technicians have been shortened.
