Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami give India victory
The World Cup hosts India beat New Zealand by four wickets at Dharamsala thanks to Virat Kohli’s 95 and Mohammed Shami’s 5-54.
As India chased a target of 274, Kohli smashed two sixes and eight fours in another classy knock.
In the earlier match, Shami starred with the ball as Daryl Mitchell smashed 130 runs for New Zealand.
Five matches into the season, India remains the only unbeaten side.
In India’s reply, play was briefly halted by fog, but Kohli remained calm and contributed to the highest successful chase in a one-day international here.
Having produced another stellar performance, he now has 354 runs at an average of 118 in a tournament he appears destined to dominate.
Rohit Sharma had given India a solid start with 46 off 40 balls, but Kohli’s calm assurance in pacing the chase was key after three in the top order were unable to get going.
As Kohli holed out to Glenn Phillips in the deep off Matt Henry with five runs needed for victory, he fell five runs short of Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries.
With 12 balls to spare, Ravindra Jadeja hit Henry for four to get India over the line with 39 not out.
Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra added 159 runs for the third wicket to help New Zealand recover from two early wickets.
It was Mitchell’s century off exactly 100 balls, but the Kiwis will regret not capitalizing in the final 10 overs to post a more commanding total.
A dress rehearsal for the World Cup final had been billed by some as this match between two unbeaten teams in the foothills of the Himalayas.
Over two decades had passed since India beat New Zealand at an ICC tournament, but the Kiwis couldn’t erase the wounds.
