In addition to winning the 2015 and 2019 World Cups, Rapinoe has played in four World Cups.

She announced before the 2023 World Cup that she would retire at the end of the NWSL season in November.

“When I reflect on my 30-plus years of playing this game, joy and gratitude dominate my emotions,” Rapinoe said.

“It has been an incredible journey and I’m looking forward to this one last chance to play for my country. I’d like to thank my team-mates and everyone who has touched my life both personally and professionally.”

She has made 203 appearances for the USA, scoring 63 goals, and helped her country win gold at the 2012 Olympics in London.

In the last 16, when the United States were knocked out of the 2023 World Cup by Sweden, one of the three American players missed a penalty.

On 21 September and 24 September, the USA will play South Africa in two friendlies, the second of which will take place at Soldier Field in Chicago and is being billed as Rapinoe’s “farewell game”.

OL Reign play their final game of the season against Chicago Red Stars on 15 October, which will mark the end of her professional career.
