An entertaining match between Murray and Frenchman Corentin Moutet ended in a 6-2 7-5 6-3 victory for Murray.

Both Katie Boulter and Jodie Burrage won their first main-draw matches in New York.

All the Britons progressed without dropping a set, including Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans, and Jack Draper.

In the first round, Boulter, 27, beat France’s Diane Parry 6-4 6-0, before Norrie defeated Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko 6-3 6-2 6-2.

Following Murray’s victory over Moutet, Draper defeated Moldova’s Radu Albot 6-1 6-4 6-3 and Evans defeated Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan 6-4 6-2 7-5.

With his victory over Russia’s Anna Blinkova, Burrage completed a successful day for British tennis, which has faced questions about its lack of depth at the top level.

Also on Monday, qualifier Lily Miyazaki reached the second round in straight sets.

With the British winning streak on the line on Tuesday, Burrage said she felt “a little pressure.”

During court, she said, “I wish I hadn’t known everyone else had won, but who knows, maybe that helped me.”

Three-time major champion Murray showed plenty of his vast experience to come through a testing encounter against 72nd-ranked Moutet. “It puts you in a better mood when other people are winning. It makes you believe you can do it a little bit more.”

The 36-year-old had less court time than he would have liked due to an abdominal injury, and he was physically and mentally challenged in humid conditions.

In the opening set, Murray was able to anticipate Moutet’s patterns of play and react well to dominate.

With two set points saved, Murray fought back from a break down in the second set, winning four straight games to win it.

Moutet demonstrated his ability to frustrate his opponents by destroying a racquet and pretending to eat the ball to indicate his frustration at not being able to level the match.

In an action-packed encounter, Murray maintained his composure.

In the third set, Moutet fell and landed awkwardly on his left wrist, Murray seemed to be suffering from cramps and there was the first use of VAR-style technology at a major.

Murray became only the ninth man to win 200 Grand Slam singles matches with his victory in just under three hours.

“He has so many ways to disrupt you, he is one of the most skilled players on the tour.”

I hope it was entertaining, there were a lot of fun points. I’m happy to have made it through because the second set was so tight.”

On Thursday, Murray will renew rivalries with Bulgarian 19th seed Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Slovakia’s Alex Molcan from two sets down.
