Rosenberg told the Associated Press the three-time Oscar nominee passed away at her Los Angeles home.

The actress was described as “a superb talent and a wonderful person.”

Laurie took a 15-year break from acting to campaign for civil rights during the 1960’s.

Upon her return, she was nominated for an Oscar for Carrie, the first movie she starred in.

Rosetta Jacobs was born in Detroit, Michigan to Russian and Polish parents.

Universal Studios signed Piper Laurie at the age of 17 – earning her a contract and a new name.

Her Hollywood contract was broken due to Laurie’s frustration with being cast in the same roles, and she moved to New York to pursue other roles.

Later, she took a 15-year break from the profession and focused on the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War.

She also married film critic Joe Morgenstern during that time, and had a daughter.

In addition to Matlock, Murder She Wrote, and ER, Laurie played George Clooney’s character’s mother.
