With 16 balls to spare, the tourists completed the chase with ease.

Tim Seifert opened the game with 48 off 32 balls, while Glenn Phillips followed with 42 off 25 balls.

The flow of runs was slowed only by 19-year-old leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who dismissed Seifert and Phillips in his 2-27.

In spite of Jonny Bairstow’s 73 from 41 balls, England fell away and posted only 175-8 after being 63-0 after six overs.

Neither Dawid Malan nor Liam Livingstone broke loose in making 26, and Harry Brook missed the opportunity to further press his World Cup selection case by holing out for four from eight.

Because of right shoulder pain, Bairstow is unable to play in the World Cup a month away.

On Friday, England and India play the first of four one-day internationals in Cardiff to prepare for their defence of the 50-over title. In the first two matches of this four-match series, England dominated. Both of the Black Caps’ victories in the final two matches were equally lopsided.

Despite the small ground, England’s score felt below par.

Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi changed the momentum with 3-30 and 2-21, but Adil Rashid was hit for two fours and a six in his first five deliveries by Seifert.

Ahmed bowled well – he had Seifert caught and bowled and Phillips taken in the leg-side deep – but New Zealand managed a shorter boundary better, and Rashid and Moeen Ali went the distance for England.

Bairstow’s injury, which he played down afterwards, meant that captain Jos Buttler, who had originally rested, took to the field.

With Joe Root and Ben Stokes returning to the team for the ODI series, he hopes for more consistency.
