Tom Hanks warns dental plan ad image is AI fake
A video with an AI version of me is out there promoting some dental plan,” the actor wrote on Instagram.
“I have nothing to do with it,” he said.
Recently, high-profile Hollywood actors and writers have struck over the “artistic challenge” AI poses to their industry.
AI systems are becoming increasingly powerful and sophisticated, so there are concerns about their ability to create ever more realistic virtual versions of real people.
Some celebrities have had their likenesses used in deepfakes, which are often used to scam people, including Martin Lewis.
As a result of the use of deepfakes in pornography, sometimes as a form of revenge, the UK government enacted tougher laws to make it easier to prosecute offenders.
Online misinformation is also exacerbated by fake AI images and videos of politicians. Among those targeted are former US president Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
Any political ads that run on Google’s platform will have to disclose if they were created using artificial intelligence, the company announced in September.
AI video manipulation can also be used in non-controversial ways, such as the pioneering virtual concert featuring Abba. In May, Hanks discussed the possibility of using AI to extend the careers of performing artists on the Adam Buxton podcast.
“We saw it coming, this ability to take zeros and ones from a computer and turn them into a face and a character. That has grown a billionfold since then.”
