TikTok testing out advert-free monthly subscription
Chinese firm is testing the service in an English-speaking market outside the US, but has declined to reveal its exact location.
At $4.99 (£4.13), the subscription is being tested.
Meta is also considering ad-free subscriptions for EU residents in order to comply with EU advertising regulations.
Users over the age of 18 are currently shown personalised ads on TikTok.
The news website TechCrunch reported that the test is small and there is no guarantee that a subscription will be rolled out worldwide.
For a monthly fee, YouTube and X, formerly Twitter, offer fewer or no ads.
In 2022, TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, earned $85 billion (£70 billion) in revenue.
Insider Intelligence estimates TikTok earned $9.98 billion in advertising revenue last year.
Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, plans to charge European users who opt out of personalised ads.
According to Meta, the EU regulators will charge users roughly €10 (£8.68) a month for Instagram and Facebook without personalised ads on desktop and €13 on mobile.
“Meta believes in the value of free services that are supported by personalised ads. However, we continue to explore options to ensure we meet evolving regulatory requirements.
In August, the firm announced it would change its terms and get consent from users to display ads based on their personal information.
In January, the Irish Data Protection Commission fined it €390m.
