On its way to the remote Tiwi islands north of Darwin, the MV-22B Osprey crashed. It is reported that five marines are in serious condition.

2,500 troops from the US, Australia, the Philippines, East Timor, and Indonesia participated in Predators Run.

The aircraft was manned only by US personnel.

On Sunday, an incident occurred on Melville Island north of Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory.

The Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as tragic and promised to assist the injured.

Michael Murphy, local police commissioner, said five marines had been returned to Darwin for treatment.

Additional police and defence personnel have been deployed to Melville Island to assist operations, triage injured people, and return them to Darwin.

In less than a month, there have been two fatal helicopter crashes during joint exercises in northern Australia.

The 45 MRH-90 Taipan of four Australian soldiers crashed off the coast of Queensland on 29 July while participating in Exercise Talisman Sabre, the largest bilateral military training exercise between the two countries.

The Osprey is a hybrid combining features of helicopters and turbo-prop planes which can travel much faster than a conventional helicopter.

But it has a troubled history, with a fatal crash in Norway last year killing four marines.
