Three Jewish schools in London close over security fears
There have been cancellations of classes at three Jewish schools in north London today, some citing planned protests in support of Palestinians.
According to one school, parents should keep their children inside because of the risk of violence in the streets.
Parents have been notified about the closures of Menorah High School in Brent, Torah Vodaas Primary School in Barnet, and Ateres Beis Yaakov in Barnet.
According to the Community Security Trust, which provides security advice to British Jews, schools should remain open.
The head teacher of Menorah High School for Girls, a state secondary school with 389 students, said the decision to close was made “in view of the planned protests”.
“Please be aware that this difficult decision has been reached because of the risk of violence on the streets,” Esther Pearlman wrote to parents.
“The police are concerned that since the girls are not in school, they will venture outdoors and have asked us to notify you that it is your responsibility to keep your children inside.”
They did not want to “spread panic” by closing Jewish schools since there was no “immediate risk” to the community.
However, he said: “We have this situation where an international day of rage has been called for. There have been antisemitic demonstrations taking place in London that openly display antisemitic sentiment.
The school is relatively isolated from the community individually. Ultimately, we’re concerned that on a day like this, an individual might do something outstandingly stupid, and it’s very difficult to control against that.” “We’re out there on our own, and we thought there was a significant risk to the kids.”
