The Middle East is on the “edge of an abyss” as a result of the war between Israel and Hamas, UN agency chief Philippe Lazzarini said

There is a possibility that violence in the region could spill over, according to the commissioner-general of UNRWA.

As he warned about the dire situation for civilians inside Gaza, he again called for humanitarian aid corridors.

According to Mr Lazzarini, “the world has lost its humanity”.

To aid Gazans, Mr Lazzarini reiterated the call for humanitarian aid corridors, saying help “needs to be uninterrupted… predictable… meaningful”.

UNRWA’s head condemned the Hamas attack on Israel as a “horrific and barbaric massacre” that created a “national trauma, a collective trauma” for Israel.

This event, however, does not justify the conduct of war without restraint, he said. “I do not believe that killing even more civilians here in the region is in the interest of security and peace.”

“Listen, we are now in a situation where there is a total siege being imposed on Gaza Strip,” Lazzarini said when asked about Israeli respect for international humanitarian law.

More than a million people have been displaced. This amounts to collective punishment, which is illegal under international humanitarian law.”

“We call on all parties involved in this conflict to respect international humanitarian law. There is no exception.” he said.

Announcing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Mr Lazzarini said 2.2 million Palestinians are “basically lacking everything”.

Thousands of people live on the floor because there is no water. You have four toilets for 4,000 people. “We are on the verge of a crisis.”

According to Mr Lazzarini, if there is no water in Gaza Strip, the disaster, which has already unfolded under our eyes, will become even worse.
