The “Eras” tour by Taylor Swift is soaring like a jet stream, high above the music scene.

According to survey data provided exclusively research firm QuestionPro, the tour could gross $2.2 billion in North American ticket sales. With a second North American leg coming next year, Swift has sold an unprecedented total of tickets for US shows just concluded in Los Angeles.

Swift’s star power and influence on local economies are a staggering demonstration of the incredible demand for entertainment and experiences that has helped boost the economy.

Swift has 68 shows in North America, and the average pre-sale and first sale ticket price was $455.78. It was not possible to determine whether respondents purchased a single ticket or multiple tickets.

Taking into account closed-off areas and floor seats, QuestionPro data shows an average attendance of 72,459 per show.

A total of $2.2 billion would make “Eras” the highest-grossing tour in history. A previous record holder, Elton John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour, grossed over $887 million from 2018 to 2023, according to Larry Miller, director of NYU’s Steinhardt’s music business program.

“We’re talking about a global pop artist who faces virtually infinite demand for tickets,” Miller said.

It has become one of the biggest social events of the year, with concertgoers spending thousands of dollars on tickets, outfits, transportation, and accommodations. According to a QuestionPro poll of 862 concertgoers who attended at least one Eras concert, they spent on average $291.62 on their outfits, $214.80 on merchandise, and $131.48 on food and drinks.

Chris Leyden, director of growth marketing at SeatGeek, said Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras’ tour is rewriting the playbook of entertainment economics. There’s more to her than just her performances – she’s an economic phenomenon as well.”

SeatGeek reported that the average resale price of an “Eras” ticket was $1,607. This is an increase of 741% over her “Reputation” tour in 2018, during which resale ticket prices averaged $191.

Swift’s blockbuster tour has had a broad economic impact to date.

Earlier this month, truckers for the tour were given $100,000 checks each, which one trucking company head described as “life-changing.”
