  • The remaining passengers on two humanitarian ships that Italy had initially refused to take in have been allowed to disembark, as another vessel carrying 234 people headed to France in the hope of a safe port.
The Ocean Viking, operated by the European organisation SOS Mediterranee, left Sicily for the French island of Corsica on Tuesday.
It was not yet clear if the ship would be allowed to dock by the French government, which had previously called on Italy to grant a safe port to the refugees and migrants.

Al Jazeera’s Tony Birtley reports from the Sicilian port of Catania, Italy.

    Iowa cowtipper says:

Italy has a right to protect its borders.

    Hello World says:

Yes sure it’s time to give reparations to libian, we should pay them and they in exchange put immigrants in concentration camps, torture them and ask money to their family for sending them back, we already did that and the new government want to do exactly that again.

    Saim Bhat says:

@TheMagicJIZZ No, you cannot make your arguments with wrong data, the current immigrant crisis is multiple times bigger than anything other ever experienced. Just a simple google search for “european immigration statistics over years” is enough to enlighten a genius like you.
And when western military coalitions bombed libya, the number of immigrants coming from libyan coast increased exponentially.
And Whatever europe faced is VERY WELL DESERVED, INFACT IT DESERVES MORE THAN THAT.
In this decade, european governments most probably will be sending their youth and munitions to iran, to gift them freedom. And eventually west will fail, and people will have to save themselves from misery and visit their european messiahs and liberators. Then conservative in Europe will again want to protect their borders. Do you even realize that European governments will have no obligation to accept any war refugees if they don’t involve itself in wars?

    TheMagicJIZZ says:

@Saim Bhat I love your arguement

Don’t bomb us or you’ll get no refugee’s lmao. if we can bomb you then why would we even struggle to resist

What a logic. Don’t bomb us but you’ll get people migrating…who comes to the people who bombed you? Lmao if I shot you why would you move? Drone strike? Move?

    Lmao wtf

    George Bronte says:

@Saim Bhat None of the migrants are Libyan..so your argument is illogical. This problem existed well before the “bombing”. I suppose all the failed states these migrants are from have been living in peace and prosperity before “the bombing”?

    tony buttie says:

we all though they wanted to protect there border, but apparently NOT ???,
so what happens the next time a NGO boat tries to dock??, just let them in !!, or express delivery to France!!

    LUDWIG says:

This is pure BS! Send them to Qatar!!

    Sareeye Ma Nusqaame says:

Qatar is not meddling and imposing puppet governments though the west are

    sweeta 17 k says:

they dont want to go to m.eastern countries because everything is very strict and they would not dare to complain galore …let alone about top hotels . and neither does the m. east want them which says it all .

    Uma Rani Rethina Velu says:

Italy had done so much for immigrants. The people want a better life why not change the government of their own country than running away. Besides the immigrants only stay among themselves and do not assimilate completely with Italian culture except for the language as they need to in order to survive. I salute Italian government and the people who have in fact done and doing so much for the non Italian people living and exploiting every single penny to survive by bearing children whereby Italians themselves are unable to bear themselves.

    Sareeye Ma Nusqaame says:

Their so called governments are imposed on them by the west and protected by AFRICOM USA occupational forces

    tynu bernard says:

Every migrants must go in a place where can be integrated. Here in EU, only migrants that can be integrated ,are from poor EU coutries, that have same religion and want to be EU people. This migrants from Africa want to live in EU ,but with different religion and different life style, like gypsy

    tynu bernard says:

@Herr Wolf No,we need them in agriculture, must make big camps with police and stay there and work. Get money 1500-2000 euro/ month,if they want to go,just go in their countries. I work in Dubai ,marine whelder and after 20 years i have no right and after i finish my contract i must go back in my country with no right to stay . We give this people to much rights. They never integrate,i see ucrainian refuge, women and children ,this people they integrate easy, after 10 years this women marry : german ,duch, etc and integrate. This africans are 80% young men ,that dont work

    sweeta 17 k says:

demanding their rules laws for starters ………..

    Romeo B. says:

Gypsy? You know that many East Europeans are also Gypsy

    Sugar Bertie11 says:

Most are from different cultures and demand to still live how they lived in their own culture. They never integrate, it’s all a lie. We are way to soft to acknowledge that.

    mimmi blu says:

I have not voted this government and I have been volunteering as a teacher of Italian to migrants for years, *but* Italy is on the brink of civi unrest because of illegal immigration: how are we supposed to give accomodation and a job to everybody? How many more millions of illegal immigrants are we supposed to help? When will we be able to say “sorry 😔 but we’ve overstreched our possibilities to help you?” How many more beggars should we have on our streets for the sheer number of newcomers we cannot accomodate?

    Peter Barkworth says:

    @Pipo Thank you for replying.
I’m trying to illustrate that if more money is put into the Italian economy for the benefit of Italians that will benefit the country step by step rather than have the money “leaking out” to other countries.
Where do Italians flee to by the way?

    sweeta 17 k says:

every country is massivly over streched money and space wise and everything else . even without any migrants ( barely real refugees ) but netherlands and other countries it has to be showed they are buliding houses for the never ending flow of arrivals .

    Marko Henry says:

I have had many conversations/discussions with pro immigration people. Who will tell me what a great benefit immigration is. When I point out that the UK has a population of 70+ million 10+ million of them who arrived in the last 20 years, I then pose the question as to when they think we are full up? I will say give me a number as to how many more people we should have is it another 5 million? 10 million? 20? million? I state that there is nearly 8 Billion people on the planet how many of them do you think should come here? I will say please give me a number ? I have never been given a number by any of them. They will carry on arguing for more sometimes pull the race card , give an excuse why we should have more but never give a number.

    mimmi blu says:

@Marko Henry we do welcome legal immigrants in Italy, but they have to go through a legal process before arrival. Italian population is actually decreasing because Italian economy has been stagnating recently, so the problem is having a job. If you have a job, you’re welcome by me because we’ll be able to integrate you, but not otherwise. We have very many abandoned villages here, but these people do not want to go there because they come here to have a “better life”, which is not compatible with living on the land farming. The sad reality is that many of them do end up farming, enslaved by the mafia.

    mimmi blu says:

@Peter Barkworth Italians do not flee, they migrate legally, normally to other EU countries.

    CuriousFurious58 says:

    How about sinking these ships?

    Max Britain says:

If only the UK had the guts to turn away economic migrants.

    Jason Bourne says:

90% that arrive in Italy are heading for UK

    Max Britain says:

@Jason Bourne In Albania has many ghost towns now.

    The Naked Truth says:

These people will all be in the UK next week. Dinghies on the way.

    Jason Bourne says:

@The Naked Truth 50,000 this year , 100,000 next year

    Alex Alex says:

So these ONGs are the ones who control who enters in Italy? Are they in complete control of Italy’s immigration policy now?

    Totò Riinaa says:

now no, the next ong go in our border italy navy or police arrested captains , the law Is create yeasterday, they are lucky

    Pedro Renard says:

With regards to the boat heading to France, may as well cut out the middle man and head straight for the UK. We know they will end up here eventually 😔

    Sigma 5 says:

Lol They’ll be intercepted by the RNLI and basically dragged to our shores…. Then the RNLI will get back again to find they themselves have nowhere to stay because of the illegals being prioritised

    The Naked Truth says:

Bet they can’t believe their luck, heading to France, nearer to UK. The British will have to shoulder the burden now, as always.

    Sigma 5 says:

@The Naked Truth Its the way the German guy claimed it was “A victory”. This is a hustle for them. They purposely go looking for people who want to illegally immigrate

    nity says:

En route to the uk yeh ..sickening

    Sigma 5 says:

@The Naked Truth apparently France offer them citizenship as well. Kinda funny to know that even the world’s destitute people would rather risk drowning in the channel than become French

    Āris Plūģis says:

sorry guys, but argument that you are coming for a better live is not a valid grounds to grant you an asylum. there is no war in countries these people are coming from.

    Shaun Bat says:

    Correct

    sweeta 17 k says:

many living in germany that arrived there in 2015 ..have gone back to their countries for holidays ..and back to germany thats how dangerous their countries are . how to have a better life in w. countries because all are struggling lack of so many things for the own citizens and they must know about the troubles and still they arrive . i guess they must have known they will get all the help even doem to a good weekly pocket money allowance .

    Michael H says:

Next time the ships will not be allowed in Italian ports.
Always wanted to live in Italy – free language school, free housing.
    Sounds like plan.

    tony buttie says:

correct, so what happens the next time a NGO boat tries to dock??. just give in

    Cobus Smith says:

    Send them to Qatar.

    Peter Sullivan says:

Italy’s PM gave in immediately, typical!

    Robertd Lucas says:

    The boats should be impounded.

    Pat Estrella says:

Let them fix the problems of corruption in Africa…

    Madala says:

    No corruption no Africa!!!!!!

    32stevo says:

why arent ships sunk after they disembark?

    Phil Fletcher says:

This is absolutely disgusting!!! I would never have climbed down even if it meant leaving the EU.☹☹☹ and the Geneva Convention on human rights of 1951.

    Israr Ahmad says:

Thanks to Italian people and government

    Jacqueline Ithell says:

Yes and once they reach France just a home run to England 🇬🇧

    The Naked Truth says:

Bet these migrants can’t believe their luck. A stepping stone to England’s south coast. Britain’s burden now. Plan in action.

    James says:

Big mistake by Italy watch out for tens of thousands more !
