Since Jamieson is not officially part of the World Cup team, he will not be available for Friday’s game against Pakistan and Monday’s game against South Africa.

In 157 ODIs, Southee has taken 214 wickets.

During the recent series in England, he captained the New Zealand squad in the absence of Kane Williamson.

In spite of not playing since March when his knee ligaments were ruptured, Williamson has also been selected for the World Cup.

It is uncertain if Williamson will be fit for the opener in Ahmedabad, but he will play later in the tournament. It is hoped Southee will be fit for the Black Caps’ opening match against England on 5 October.

After dropping a catch in the fourth one-day international against England on 15 September, the 34-year-old underwent surgery last Thursday.

The squad will add Kyle Jamieson as a contingency.
