Russian activist artist Petr Pavlensky has been sentenced to six months in custody by a French court for his role in a sex tape scandal that brought down a political ally of President Macron.

Pavlensky, who moved to France in 2017, will wear an electronic tag while serving his time outside prison.

A six-month suspended sentence will also be served by his partner.

In 2020, Benjamin Griveaux’s candidacy for mayor of Paris was ruined by a video they released.

Both of them have been ordered to pay €15,000 (£12,950) in damages and €5,000 for legal costs to Mr Griveaux.

The partner of Pavlensky, Alexandra de Taddeo, had a relationship with Mr Griveaux in 2018.

A video was posted to a website in 2020, revealing screenshots of messages exchanged between the two and a man performing a sexual act on a young woman.

Ms Taddeo was arrested after its release on charges of invasion of privacy and unauthorized distribution of personal images.

It was Pavlensky’s responsibility to post the video.

When the explicit videos were released, Griveaux was running for the mayoral seat in Paris as a member of President Emmanuel Macron’s ruling party.

Three and a half years after the event, he has given up politics and was not present at the trial.

In a statement to local media, Richard Malka said the former secretary of state was “satisfied that justice has been done to him, but the wrongs he has suffered will never be righted.”.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon described the video’s release as “odious”, while Marine Le Pen suggested Mr Griveaux should not have resigned. Former Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo said people’s privacy should be respected.

It is not the first time Pavlensky has been sent to prison. As a result of setting fire to a bank in Paris in 2019, he was sentenced to three years in prison, two of which were suspended.
