Scarlett Johansson faced nasty welcome at Venice film festival
Venice film festivals are known for their long-standing ovations for movie premieres. It was an enthralling experience that brought tears of joy to the actors. Scarlett Johansson, on the other hand, had an equally contrary experience.
According to the event’s artistic director, she fought back tears as her movie was booed for the first time at the oldest film festival.
Alberto Barbera revealed in 2013 that the hooting by the attendees almost caused her to cry during the premiere of the Marvel movie Under the Skin.
It was one of the worst screenings I’ve ever attended. This was the only time a film was booed by the audience. He added, “Scarlett almost cried.”.
She heard me say, “Don’t worry, the film will be recognized in time,” adding, “And that’s exactly what happened.”. Since then, it has become a cult classic.”
After the festival’s hostile reception the following year, the 38-year-old responded.
“It was the first time I had seen the film with an audience and the first time I had seen it finished. I was on this huge mezzanine, so I felt super-exposed,” the actor said.
When the lights came up at the end, the crowd cheered and booed simultaneously, but with equal gusto. Scarlett continued, “I didn’t know how to respond.”.
The only thing I could think of was that I was … I wouldn’t say disturbed, but shocked, adding, “I looked over at Jonathan and he was absolutely delighted.”
We left the theater and I said, ‘That was so strange,’ and Jonathan said, ‘That was the best reaction!’ I have never heard a sound like that in my life.”
In the movie, Scarlett plays an alien avatar living among humans and trying to make inroads into society by targeting Scottish men.
