  • Italy's government is being sued by humanitarian organisations for rejecting refugees and migrants rescued at sea.
The new far-right-led government in Italy has allowed only a select number of refugees and migrants to leave two rescue boats that are moored in the Sicilian port of Catania.
The ships, with hundreds of refugees and migrants on board who have been denied entry, are refusing to leave until the decision is reversed.

Al Jazeera's @Tony Birtley reports from Catania in Sicily, Italy.

    Kath Ev says:

Why Italy? These NGO ships are not even Italian vessels nor it’s Italian NGOs .

    Michael Yun says:

Because they can claim they are helping. In fact Italy should stand up for its country and since these NGO ship aren’t registered in Italy they can go where they are register and drop off the refugee there. Bet you they won’t so that coz they don’t want burden their country while pretending to be helping.

    Jeremy Fielding says:

The NGOs should be fined a large amount of money and sent packing with their passengers.

    Ocean Wave says:

They are from Germany and Norway, all of which are located at the very top part of Europe. How convenient!

    dunebug says:

honestly they‘re probably just useful to overturn the government and culture in italy

    KIM Happy says:

You don’t clean your room by keep dumping your belonging outside. What you do is to clean and organize your belonging.

    Top Lobster says:

This is worse, you are being sued because you won’t let your neighbour clean his room buy dumping his rubbish into yours.

    Socio-Economic News Network says:

Give the houses of those who are protesting against the government policy. Then they will know how ordinary people feel.

    Denny Keaton says:

Let them go through the years long court proceedings and appeals while waiting on that ship. Big brain move on their part. 😅😂🤣

    RaffyLucy says:

Why not take them to Tunisia or Morocco. Someone tell me why the ports in those countries are safe enough for cruise ships, but not enough for these guys?

    blue78174 says:

Exactly….Why dont those Organizations sue those countries for not letting them in? Or maybe the other 10 or so countries that have a port on the Med….why only Italy? The real reason is because with those countries they wont get paid a dime the NGO’s, in the end its a business modell.

    Dave Hill says:

No promises in this life. Stay home you lot, make your home better. We did, and our generosity of sharing is spent. Europe has its own problems to sort out.
    Turn them back.

    Sean Hedley says:

    That’s my point too !
When we were under threat by the Germans our men didn’t jump on boats . My Grandad and his brother did like everybody else, he fought and in he’s and his brother’s case gave their lives for their Country!
After the war we worked together as a nation to rebuild and prosper.

    E Clark says:

    E Clark says:

    Dave Hill says:

@Sean Hedley watching those losers just walking up the pebble beaches hurt.
D-Day! Wtf was it for? No MGs, no naztis, just a fkn hotel for these?
Again. What did our forefathers fight for?

    Lars Thorwald says:

Italy should sue the “humanitarian organizations” for enabling human traffickers.

    freebeerfordworkers says:

@shadrana1 an excellent idea but given the self-righteous power of the left I don’t see it happening.

    Lea Natale says:

    Throw them overboard

    Lea Natale says:

    Forza Italy

    Jean Compte says:

    @Romeo B. I like your style😂

    Ocean Wave says:

The Great Replacement is being implemented at UN level! Who would have thought that?

    Vatsmith says:

It should be the Italian government taking these ‘rescue charities’ to court for complicity in people traficking.

    marc carter says:

The only way to stop people wanting to cross is for the situation in their home country to improve. That seems to be the only solution that works for everyone.

    freebeerfordworkers says:

Yes Nigeria for example is one of the richest and most corrupt countries in Africa and its population is going through the roof. They will do nothing for their people as long as they can send them to the rest of the world.
I’m not a conspiracy theorist but wonder if the large number of visas granted to Nigerians and others to live in Britain might be linked to the banks investments in their home countries. If countries refuse to take immigrants they might find their investments being nationalised .

    Andrew Elliott says:

Marc, the other side of your sensible point is that the situation in the west is growing worse.

    Paul Rice says:

Most of these countries have been receiving aid and help for decades and they are still in the same mess .

    paula saani says:

@Paul Rice Because the donating governments didn’t demand accountability. So much money was wasted on corrupt leaders becoming ridiculously wealthy while their own people suffered.

    Āris Plūģis says:

they should be brought to the court. for an illegal people smuggling.

    Michael Davies says:

What country in it’s right mind would want to open doors to persons who just want to freeload there religion is not compatible with Christianity, their treatment of woman speaks for itself, look at what’s happening in towns in the UK they harass young girls and are just a nuisance the Police Force don’t do anything about them.i don’t mind anyone who wants to come to our shores so long as they abide by the law.

    Āris Plūģis says:

@Michael Davies not me. i mind immigration even they abide by the law. law abiding or not, they will change local culture anyway.

    joyce gray says:

And the Italian government will ignore the laws, take them to Germany after all it is one of their recue boats that rescued them.

    ragnarian says:

They should take these charity groups to court as being complicit is every crime commited by illegal immigrants

    Usman Aslam says:

Italian government should not have helped Nato to occupy and destroy Iraq, etc…

    ragnarian says:

@Usman Aslam except that the vast majority of these immigrants aren’t from such places, they‘re from peaceful/safe (by UN reckoning)

    Laurence Smith says:

@Usman Aslam Iraq shouldn’t have invaded Kuwait. Iraq got what they deserved.

    Eric Connor says:

It is a tricky situation. We can’t take every poor person from Africa and it is not fair to take just a few, it sounds harsh but these people really do have to rebuild their own countries they will never improve if every fit person just leaves.

    David Oldboy54 says:

They fail in their own countries do you really think once settled in ours they will improve things??

    dunebug says:

why does it have to be ‘fair’? life is really not fair. Either we totally destroy europe together and something new rises from the ashes or we try hold on but are racists. Why would they need to rebuild? these young men often come from rich families but are usually the ‘black sheep’ and go to chance their luck in europe instead. At the moment the tax payer pays millions every day to house them in hotels and the like, at some point everything breaks.

    Jeremy Fielding says:

Push them back out to sea and let the country where the ship is registered take them. Stand firm Italy your future is at stake.

    Kevin Kenny says:

How much are these charities being paid. They are making money off the back of these situations. Stand firm Italy

    Cap Tango says:

Funny how a charity can afford expensive legal fees to protect the rights of illigeal Immigrants when Italy own peoples rights are trodden over. 🇬🇧

    shadrana1 says:

If the Italian Government ignores the kangaroo ECHR where does this unfair court go from there? The UK must ignore them as well.

    Good luck everyone says:

Italy for Italians, anybody else is a visitor or invader. Big respect to Italy.

    Kian S says:

And those thousands of Italians that settled in the US in the past – also invaders, right?

    David 🤡 🌎 says:

Charities are destroying themselves. I see many people talking about never donating to any charity ever again.

    cliona moore says:

These people should be taken to court , or take them to your own homes if you feel so strongly .
