Race against time to save 102 missing in India floods
A cloudburst over a lake also caused massive floods, causing 14 deaths, according to the state government.
Over 3,000 tourists were stranded in various parts of the state, officials said.
Statewide, hundreds of search and rescue officers have been deployed.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and assured him of all possible support.
Lhonak lake in the state breached its embankment after a cloudburst on Tuesday night. There was an alarming rise in water levels in the Teesta river in Lachen Valley as a result.
After a nearby dam released water into the river, the flood worsened. According to a defence spokesperson, water levels increased by 15-20 feet downstream. A state official said nearly 14 people were trapped in the tunnels of the dam.
There has been a massive search and rescue operation launched by the Indian army to locate and rescue those who have gone missing. One soldier was rescued on Wednesday night and is in stable condition, officials said.
PTI reported that rescuers also recovered a child’s body from the flood plains of the Teesta river in Singtam.
According to the army, search operations are being conducted in conditions of incessant rain, fast-flowing water in the Teesta River and washed-away roads and bridges.
Roads and bridges were severely damaged by the floods, according to Sikkim’s chief secretary VB Pathak.
The mobile network in the northern part of the state has also been disrupted.
In addition to its own soldiers, the army has established three helplines for the families of those who have gone missing in the state.
Several family members of the missing persons have been contacted and informed about the situation, according to the statement.
