Nasa astronauts will be flying in style, with luxury fashion designer Prada helping design space suits for the 2025 Moon mission.

In collaboration with another private company, Axiom Space, the Italian fashion house will design the suits.

Axiom said Prada would contribute materials and manufacturing expertise to the project.

Due to their design experience, one astronaut told the BBC that Prada was up to the challenge.

Prada’s involvement in the America’s Cup sailing competition has enhanced that experience beyond the Milan catwalks.

“Prada has considerable experience with various types of composite fabrics and may actually be able to contribute to the outer layers of the new space suit,” said Professor Jeffrey Hoffman, a NASA veteran who has flown five missions and carried out four spacewalks.

People should not expect astronauts to wear paisley spacesuits or fancy patterns like that. Maintaining a good thermal environment is the most important factor.

As a miniature spacecraft, a spacesuit supplies pressure, oxygen, and keeps you at a reasonable temperature.

According to reports, the suit weighed 55kg and was better suited to women.

Prada and Artemis said they would use “innovative technologies and design” to explore the lunar surface to a greater extent.
