Parents of Siam Paragon mall shooter ask for forgiveness
The boy’s father wrote to the media in Thai that his family is cooperating fully with the authorities.
On Tuesday, a boy opened fire inside the Siam Paragon mall, one of Asia’s most popular shopping centers.
It is unclear what motivated him.
Parents expressed their “profound sense of regret” in the letter saying their son is now in juvenile observation and protection.
As a result of our son’s actions at the Siam Paragon department store, we apologize deeply to the victims, their families, and the injured.
“This includes the public, tourists, businesses and store owners, and anyone evacuated or troubled nearby.
It also includes doctors, nurses, police officers, government officials, whether Thai, Chinese, Myanmar or Lao, and all those who have been affected by this incident.
The incident has deeply saddened and shocked us, and we accept responsibility as fully as we can.”
On Wednesday, Thai authorities charged the teenager with premeditated murder and illegal possession of a firearm. It was reported that the boy used a blank-firing pistol modified by the police.
Bail has not been requested by his family.
China and Myanmar were the countries of origin of the two victims. One Laotian, one Chinese and three Thais were also injured.
Police say the boy suffered a psychological breakdown before the shooting, according to Reuters.
In a court document seen by Reuters, the suspect was ordered into juvenile detention instead of being detained at a mental health facility.
