Nicolo Zaniolo and Sandro Tonali leave Italy camp
Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo have left Italy’s training camp after being told they are involved in an investigation by Italian prosecutors.
It has been announced that the players would not be able to participate in Italy’s two upcoming qualifiers for Euro 2024 because they were not in the right “condition.”
According to Italian news agency ANSA, the FIGC’s investigation is related to illegal betting.
A day earlier, FIGC prosecutors announced an investigation into 22-year-old Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli, who is suspected of placing illegal bets online under multiple guises.
The prosecutors from Turin informed former Milan players Tonali, 23, and Zaniolo, 24, of the probe on Thursday at Italy’s Coverciano training center.
“Regardless of the nature of the investigative order, given that the two players are not in the right condition to fulfill their commitments in the upcoming days, the FIGC has decided to allow them to return to their respective clubs,” said the federation.
A matchup against Malta will be played on Saturday before Italy travels to face England in Group C on Wednesday.
There are six points separating the Azzurri from the leaders England in the table. Despite playing one fewer game than Ukraine and North Macedonia, Euro 2020 winners are level on seven points.
