  • A Qatar World Cup ambassador has called homosexuality "damage in the mind", in an interview days before the start of the competition.

The former Qatar international Khalid Salman told German broadcaster ZDF that LGBTQ+ people attending the tournament should "accept our rules".

Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar because it is deemed to be immoral under Islamic Sharia law

Salman said: “You know what haram [forbidden] means? I am not a strict Muslim but why is it haram? Because it is damage in the mind."

Qatar has faced longstanding criticism for its human rights record, with many people questioning whether it is an acceptable venue for the World Cup competition.

    Martin Ebon says:

Its very hard to change culture and ones religion unfortunately. Who is shocked at these comments if you ask questions like these to someone who has always had these religious beliefs all their lives. Fifa shouldnt have picked an ultra conservative country to host the World Cup and then expect liberal changes such as having more human rights or being LGBT friendly. Where is the logic with these organisations?

    Solar Wind says:

@Anas Mouden A lot complain about Russia because of that. In my country they talked A LOT about the discriminatory laws when they were passed.

    Solar Wind says:

@MarkTheGameDriver Tell me you’re against human rights, unless they benefit you, without telling me.

    MarkTheGameDriver says:

@Solar Wind can I come to your house naked??? I feel like I have the right to be naked . Would u condone that in your house .Grow up

    Martina Dempsey says:

Fact!!!!!! Fifa is the poison not homosexuality

    VerveTech says:

That’s what they should care about because they’re a business organization. Your government is responsible for whatever political BS you have not corporates.

    Public Public says:

    Sumanth Murthy says:

Well, at least they’re not hiding about how they feel about same sex relationships.
Second, there should be more coverage about the death and treatment of migrant workers while building the stadiums and the premises for the tournament

@Markiplier005 message me on telegram says:

Congratulations you have been selected among three lucky winner’s text me on…

    RudyRudolpho says:

FIFA knew where Qatar stood and they still gave them the games….

    Mohammed Althani says:

Becaus fifa is against gay people

    Aaron Ua Conaill says:

@Bab Blo yeah, why shouldn’t we change?! We’re only talking about human rights here… /s/

    Evo 8 Power says:

@Bab Blo yes they are….they are forcing there religion on us.

    360 Fov says:

Giving Qatar a HUGE financial boost suggests FIFA share the same views as Qatar.

    360 Fov says:

@Bab Blo Or maybe nobody should have to change… it’s a scary thing if one society can dictate what’s allowed to all other societies. It’s just highly unfortuante for people who were unlucky to be born in places that deems them as criminal and subhuman.

    DNC says:

Blatter wasn’t complaining when they were giving him a load of money

    blue zone says:

    Were is your proof idiot

    Milhouse says:

FIFA should have not picked Qatar.

If Qatar is not willing to change their laws then it should not be allowed to host any international sporting event in the future.

    Mohamed Gebril says:

@Milhouse what about Russia? They also didn’t tolerate alphabet people, I didn’t see anybody complaining. Maybe because Russia has weapons and are white Europeans?

    Milhouse says:

@Mohamed Gebril On the contrary, a lot of people were upset that Russia hosted the Winter Olympics many years ago.

    Diana X says:

    @Milhouse
The facts of the matter are:
    1. Qatar had these laws in place before it was selected to host the World Cup 12 years ago.

    2. Blatter was replaced as President over 7 years ago (in 2015) after Fifa corruption had been widely publicised (even though before then it was blatantly obvious to even a blind man on a galloping horse).

    3. The new regime of Fifa since 2015 had ample time to select a replacement host for the 2022 World Cup if they considered Qatar to not be suitable, but nut not do so.

So the “contovarsies” are not remotely new but have existed for many years without the bbc making such headline news.

It is hypocrisy in the extreme that the BBC are challenging abuse of human rights in another country when in the UK (the country the bbc is based) it never said anything about human rights here being abused over the last 2.5+ years.. Not only did they not challenge such (which is one of the roles of the press in a functioning democracy) but actively endorsed such abuse.

Furthermore, the bbc current & previous high ranking politicians (including an ex prime minister) who were being hateful towards and advocating discrimination against sections of the public.

    Keith Mc says:

FIFA knew what the values Qatar held before awarding them the games. So why are so many people surprised to find Qatar likes Putin and is against homosexuality?

    I

    An Acc says:

@Queen Bean Forbidding something that breaks the foundation of a country (marriage, safe households, positive moral values) is what most countries did up until not long ago. It’s a risk to the public’s and a person’s health to allow things like s0d0my. That is true for every group of people even if some groups are more over represented.

    I AM DOCTORCAT says:

@Miguel Keeno do you know if women go there and they got rape. They believe women fault and women go jail for many years

    Miguel Keeno says:

@I AM DOCTORCAT I’ve never been there and don’t want to go there and I don’t believe in there laws or ways but that is exactly y I don’t go there because if I don’t agree then I shouldn’t go

    Salis Eduardo says:

    Lewis C says:

I wish we had the same homosexuality laws as Qatar!! Good for them!!

    Neil Ebochue says:

LGBTQ persons should respect the law of the land or just watch the tournament from home. No one is above the law of a country in any country. Even Uk have their laws n no one is above it. Not everyone wants to be homosexual or likes to see such behavior as well. As he said, in his perception, it corrupts the mind. There should be freedom of choice for everyone, however the law of the land must be respected at all times.

    kolie music group says:

A wise man respect a rule’s that govern any country.. it might not favor you but rules are rules. without procreation, there will not be a human to have rights.. polygamy is illegal in the west but legal in Africa and Middle east.

    Taiwo Abolurin says:

When you visit a country, you have to abide by their laws. If you can’t abide by their laws, don’t go there.

    An Acc says:

@DFFRNTTD They have like every country an equal right to host the event if the time comes. If you’re gonna start boycotting or forbidding countries because you personally can’t handle their values and culture, it’s gonna be 10-15 progressive western countries left. The rest of the world will form their own cup and stop caring about you.

    zeus111 says:

    I won’t. Qatar is a shithole

    Hmmmmm 🤔 says:

@DFFRNTTD Why? Is this the football World Cup or a sexfest? Grow a brain cell and keep that claptrap OUT of sport

    Hmmmmm 🤔 says:

@Milhouse Well of a player’s bedroom preferences are more important than playing football then he should absolutely stay away !

    Milhouse says:

@Hmmmmm 🤔 As I previously said, this is the fault of FIFA

    Q S says:

Keep trying to smear and attack our beloved Qatar while all the previous countries who had hosted the world cup had far worse issues like Brazil and south africa but no one cared or talked about it. I’m tired of this double standard and the hypocrisy

    European Union: says:

Blatter said to himself Qatar is not good for organising the World Cup, but his bank account spoke louder.

    STF UP says:

@Milhouse Qatar is rich af the amount that they can spend a lot of money on world cup infact they have spend over 300billion usd which very few countries can do so it is going to be the most glamorous wc of all time and even if infuture if Qatar hosts another sporting event like Olympics or Asian games then the even would be epic and no matter what Qatar is a ultra-conservative Muslim nation so no way its going accept wester ideologies so its a dead try

    Milhouse says:

@STF UP As i said before, if Qatar is not willing to change its laws then it should not be allowed to host any international sporting event since many athletes and sports fans are gay.

    Hmmmmm 🤔 says:

Blather said qatar was too small a country NOT about their stance on LGBT stuff. Proud of Qatar for standing up to the tide of brainwashing going on

    okbutwhy says:

@Bab Blo No, Qatar also treats migrant workers terribly. Many have died for these games and many did not get paid what they were promised

    STF UP says:

@Milhouse Well Qatar can temporarily allow gays from other countries basically athletes and fans i think then its okay it doesnt means they will decriminalize homosexuality permanently in thier Country. And homosexuals can actually visit wc but they can not propagate thier sexuality and have gay sex there. i think Qatar is generous here to allow them and homosexuals need to compromise something there i dont think not flying lgbt flag or not having sex for short period of time is a big deal

    Hurley Cape town says:

I have been to the Qatar airport and a girl friend of mine was wearing a tank top(you could see her bra) and she had tattoos and the death stares and remarks she got were not a joke,i would fear for my life being a gay person in Qatar, not just from police but the people.

    Muhammad Muhammad says:

When you go to Rome do what the Romans do… Same when you go to Qatar just do what the Qataris do. Respect their Culture.

    Jigjigaawi says:

You were going to Muslim country and should have respected the laws, rules and norms of that country.

    Ewout Geentriangeldus says:

@Jigjigaawi That is why so many Muslims have fled and are applying for asylum and a mosque here in the west

    Qianqin Li says:

My only wish is seeing good soccer games, not any arguments

    PrimeParadox says:

Yup, gay people want to see good soccer games, not get arrested or killed. Good on your super enlightening selfishness.

    Tuan Hassen says:

this is not the” Gay tournament”to select the best gay in the world.
this is the” Fifa world cup😆”to
be best foot ball team in the world.😊

    dramatic 255 says:

    Bravo

    Andreas Knab says:

well then quatar should not be part of it, because they are by far not good enough. And they should not be allowed to host it because the host automatically qualifys for the finals.

    Martin JH says:

Is this a sport computation or some kind of propagation? Just let the national teams of countries play football. We just want to watch a football match not political debates.

    Antidote54 says:

its freedom of speech. nothing to be insulted about.

    Anisa Ali says:

Yes its true “its damaging the minds of the people”

    Moses Matsepane says:

We can’t pressure a country to change its laws for the sake of a sporting event. They were dubiously awarded the World Cup with cognisance of their laws. Ultimately, they are the hosts, and as Football fans, this is about the games. As long as the matches are going to proceed as planned, everything else is secondary.

    Ar Is says:

I can’t believe people are trying to forcefully change a religion
