Moroccans are already reeling from tragedy: 11 Moroccans died in the Grenfell fire in 2017, the most of any country.

In Kensington, Imane Bouzir works at the Al-Hasaniya Moroccan Women’s Center.

In response to the earthquake, the psychotherapist said the centre offered online counselling to people in Morocco and the UK.

Originally from Marrakesh and with family there, Bouzir said she was filled with “anxiety and helplessness” after hearing the news. All of her relatives were safe, which was a blessing.

Her work has been helping Grenfell survivors for the last six years, most of whom are still recovering.

The Moroccan people who were affected by Grenfell are also affected by the earthquake, she explained. It’s almost as if they are having another trauma on top of what they already have.

As a result of Grenfell, people lost their homes, their loved ones, their stability, and their sense of safety, and I think it’s the same now.”

People’s PTSD had been reactivated, she said.

“I’ve seen sleepless nights, people who have stopped eating, avoiding other people,” she said.

The people who haven’t experienced the Grenfell disaster are already showing signs of PTSD – hypervigilance, nightmares, sleeplessness.”

Health, welfare, education, and cultural needs of Moroccan and Arabic-speaking women and their families are served by the center.

To help people cope with psychological trauma, we are offering trauma counselling and bereavement counselling sessions,” Mrs Bouzir said.
