McDonald’s is getting rid of McFlurry spoons

The McFlurry spoon, which sparked confusion among its fans for being hollow, is being phased out as the fast food chain says it seeks more sustainable alternatives. Using the clear plastic spoon as a spindle, the toppings were mixed into the ice cream using the McFlurry machine.

McDonald’s says its US locations are changing how they mix McFlurry treats, with machines now using reusable spindles that are changed and cleaned after every McFlurry is made. In addition to the small black spoons that are currently paired with its sundaes, the shakes will be served with a smaller spoon.

By making the change, the company explained that it would reduce single-use plastic waste without altering the taste of the McFlurry.

To become more environmentally friendly, the fast food giant aims to reduce plastic use.

In 2018, McDonald’s set a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its offices and restaurants by 36% between 2015 and 2030. The chain replaced some of its plastic Happy Meal toys in 2021 with 3-D paper-based toys.

McDonald’s recently announced that self-serve soda machines would be eliminated by 2032, including the McFlurry spoon. Since the pandemic, consumer behavior has changed, and the chain has seen a rise in business through its drive-thru and delivery services, with fewer people choosing to eat in its dining rooms.
