Max Verstappen’s success underestimated, says Fernando Alonso

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso believes Max Verstappen’s dominance this season is being underestimated.

The Red Bull driver won the Dutch Grand Prix for the ninth time in a row, equaling Sebastian Vettel’s all-time record for the same team in 2013.

In a chaotic, challenging wet-dry-wet race, Verstappen once again proved his superiority over his team-mate Sergio Perez. It was his 11th victory in 13 races, moving him ever closer to a third consecutive world title.

The Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said Verstappen was “untouchable – no driver on the grid would be able to achieve what he has achieved in that car”.

Horner, however, is biased.

On his way to second place at Zandvoort, Alonso made some stunning passing moves at the heavily banked Hugenholtz hairpin.

In the aftermath, Alonso was asked if he thought Verstappen was driving above everyone else, or if someone like himself or Lewis Hamilton could match him.

‘To win in such a dominant manner in any sport is so difficult,’ Alonso said.

To be at the same level as him… We both have a lot of self-confidence as drivers, so I believe that I can do it as well. I don’t know (about) Lewis, but I can do it.

“You need to be in a state where you feel connected to the car.

Today I felt like I was giving 100 percent in a racing car, but maybe (at the last race) in Spa or in Austria (three races earlier) I wasn’t at that level.

“I think Max is achieving that 100% more often than us at the moment, than any other driver, and that’s why he’s dominating.”
