Man who crashed car into Chinese consulate shot dead

The unidentified man was shot after officers arrived at the scene, according to a police statement.

A blue Honda car was seen resting in the lobby and dozens of people fled the consulate.

The consulate condemned the incident, saying it posed a “serious threat” to the safety of its staff and others.

Moreover, it said, “We condemn this violent attack and reserve the right to pursue those responsible.”

The consulate sent solemn representations to the US, urging authorities to resolve the matter appropriately.

A police investigation is underway, but no further details have been released.

There is a heavy police presence in Japantown, with the consulate building cordoned off.

There were damaged pieces of furniture in the lobby, including queue barriers and chairs.

Inside the consulate, no injuries have been reported.
