Leading presidents and prime ministers from around the world are meeting for the annual G20 leaders’ summit in India’s capital, Delhi, from 9-10 September.

This year’s meeting will focus on sustainable development, but the ongoing conflict in Ukraine will also be discussed.

It is a club of nations that meets to discuss plans for the global economy called the G20.

Together, G20 countries produce 85% of the world’s economic output and 75% of the world’s trade. Two-thirds of the world’s population lives in these countries.

Members include the European Union, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK, and the US. It is always a pleasure to have Spain as a guest.

As part of the G20, a smaller group of member countries meets as the G7.

Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa have formed a separate group called Brics.

As a result of its recent summit, six additional nations were invited to join: Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Climate change, sustainable energy, international debt forgiveness, and taxing multinational corporations have become more prominent issues discussed by G20 leaders in recent years.

A different G20 member state takes over the presidency each year and sets the agenda.

In 2022, Indonesia held the presidency, and Bali was the site of the leaders’ summit.

During its presidency of 2023, India wants the Delhi event to focus on sustainable development and measures to spread economic growth more evenly between developed and developing countries.

As well as group sessions, the summit provides opportunities for one-to-one discussions.

Joe Biden will meet with individual leaders to discuss climate change, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and getting the World Bank to do more to combat poverty, according to the White House.
