Key moments from Trump’s court reunion with Michael Cohen
In Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial in New York, Tuesday proved to be the most dramatic day in court yet.
Michael Cohen, the former president’s former lawyer and sworn enemy, testified for hours about how Mr Trump inflated the value of his assets “arbitrarily.”
It has already been ruled that Mr Trump overestimated the value of his properties to secure favourable loans, but a trial will determine the damages he must pay.
The Attorney General of New York, Letitia James, is seeking a fine of $250 million (£205 million) and a ban on Mr Trump doing business in his home state.
It has been repeatedly denied that Mr Trump did anything wrong, arguing that his assets were actually undervalued. The former president has occasionally attended the trial on a voluntary basis and is expected to testify at some point.
In one of Cohen’s most shocking revelations, the former president asked him to “reverse engineer” assets to increase their value based on an arbitrarily chosen number.
Allen Weisselberg, former CFO of the Trump Organization, said he and he did “whatever Mr Trump told us”.
Cohen claimed they would work together until they reached Mr Trump’s “desired goal”.
Cohen’s claims could not be directly addressed in court by Mr Trump. As Cohen’s former attorney took the stand, he looked in Cohen’s direction, but said nothing.
During court recesses, the former president discredited Cohen, calling him a “proven liar” and a “felon”.
Having once stated that he would “take a bullet” for Mr Trump, Cohen received a three-year jail sentence in 2018 for lying to Congress about hush money payments.
