On his social media site, Truth Social, Mr Trump attacked Judge Arthur Engoron’s clerk.

If the order was disobeyed, the judge warned of “serious sanctions.”

A number of personal attacks have been made against the judge by Mr Trump, who has called him “deranged” and a “rogue adjudicator”.

However, Tuesday’s gag order only applies to public comments against court staff.

At a campaign event on Tuesday, Mr Trump posted a picture of Allison Greenfield with Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. He called Ms Greenfield Schumer’s girlfriend in the post and said the case against him should be dismissed.

He did not mention anyone by name, but referred to the social media incident, saying that a defendant “posted a disparaging, untrue and personally identifying post about a member of my staff to a social media account”.
