India to resume visa services for Canadians citizens
According to the Indian High Commission in Ottawa, India will resume visa services for Canadians after they were halted in September due to a major diplomatic row.
India claimed the move was due to “security threats” disrupting work at its Canadian missions.
A serious dispute over the killing of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil led to the suspension.
According to Ottawa, India was behind the killing, an allegation New Delhi has dismissed as absurd.
After reviewing the security situation at their missions and considering recent Canadian measures they did not name, officials said they would resume issuing some visas on Wednesday.
In a statement, they said “further decisions would be informed based on the ongoing evaluation of the situation.”.
According to reports, entry visas, business visas, medical visas, and conference visas will resume on Thursday.
In accordance with the website of Toronto’s Consulate General of India, entry visas are only available to “persons of Indian origin” and their spouses and children.
Canadian tourists, who require a specific tourist visa, may not be able to benefit from the resumption of services.
After Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada was investigating credible allegations that India was involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist leader who was shot and killed in Surrey, British Columbia, relations between India and Canada reached historic lows.
Trudeau stressed that Canada was not looking to escalate the rift with India by urging India to cooperate with the murder investigation.
