In Florida wages raised to $12 an hour part of 2020 constitution

The minimum wage in Florida increased by one dollar to $12/hour on Saturday. A constitutional amendment approved by voters in 2020 gradually raises the Sunshine State’s minimum wage to $15/hour by September 30, 2026.

According to FloridaCommerce, when voters approved the ballot measure to incrementally raise base pay in 2020, Florida’s minimum wage was $8.56/hour. Following the amendment, the state’s minimum wage rose by $0.09 to $8.65 on January 1, 2021, and then to $10 on September 30, 2021.

Since then, the minimum wage has increased by $1 every September 30 until it reaches $15/hour by 2026.

In the meantime, the federal minimum wage has remained at $7.25/hour since 2009.

According to the US Department of Labor, Florida’s northern neighbor Georgia has the lowest state minimum wage of $5.15/hour.

The minimum wage in Washington is the highest of any state, at $15.54/hour, while Washington D.C.’s minimum wage was raised to $17/hour on July 1.
