Google Cloud on Monday announced new artificial intelligence-powered search capabilities that it said will help health-care workers quickly pull accurate clinical information from different types of medical records. 

Clinicians face many challenges in finding valuable information and data in the health care industry, since it’s often stored in multiple formats and systems. Doctors will be able to search for information in clinical notes, scanned documents, and electronic health records using Google Cloud’s new search tool. 

According to the company, the new capabilities will save health care workers a great deal of time and energy.

While it should save time for clinicians to do that search, it should also prevent frustration and make it easier for them to get an answer, Lisa O’Malley, senior director of product management at Google Cloud said.

It is no longer necessary for doctors to read through patient notes, faxes, and electronic health records separately in order to gain an understanding of a patient’s history. Instead, they can search for questions such as “What medications has this patient taken in the past 12 months? ” in one place, with all the relevant information at hand.

O’Malley said Google’s new search capabilities can also be used to apply the correct billing codes and determine whether patients qualify for clinical trials.

According to her, the technology has the ability to cite and link back to the original source of the information, which is from an organization’s own internal data. Clinical staff shouldn’t have to worry about the AI hallucinating or producing inaccurate results as a result.

It will be particularly helpful to health-care workers who are already burdened with staff shortages and paperwork overload.
