  • Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has announced that it will cut 13% of its workforce.

The first mass lay-offs in the firm's history will result in 11,000 employees, out of a worldwide headcount of 87,000, losing their jobs.

Meta's chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, said the cuts were "the most difficult changes we've made in Meta's history."

Zuckerberg blamed massive long-term expectations for growth based on the firm's rise in revenue during the pandemic.

The news follows major lay-offs at Twitter, which cut about half its staff, and other tech firms.

What more surprising is that they were hiring that amount of ppl?! what were they all doing for one website daily?meetings? changing around buttons and menus aroond interface daily? i saw no improvement in anything for a decade!! and metaverse is no even any good!!

    alok shukla says:

This was going to happen. US tech firms needed a reason to remove incompetent political employees and Twitter gave them the way. They will hire eventually more people but with proper cost to contribution evaluation.

as a person with glasses who tried a VR headset recently, no thank you. There’s no way I’d willingly spend any significant time on this thing.

    Kit Coffey says:

glasses here too. they never think of us when designing anything. it’s not comfortable to wear stuff atop glasses but they don’t seem to care.

    Alex M says:

@Kit Coffey Yup, I tried a fancy headset for a VR game and my glasses were kinda pulled up and it was a very annoying feeling, and I am sure my experience was kinda dizzy compared to others. At the very least they need to design glasses-friendly version of these things which would fit comfortably.

@DaRkLoRd1061 It takes a lot of people to train the censorship AI. Now they are not needed any more.

Even though i am a young guy. I am not looking forward to this “meta verse” thing. I think the experience of going to a device and googling or shopping on an online retail store is fine. And of course watching YouTube. Had a lot of fun memories of this as a kid. Also avatars are weird. Not sure if I am ok with this idea.

    YeoSprings says:

While definitely bad for the employees losing their jobs during a time like this. I also am glad Facebook is taking a tumbling after all the behind the scenes things they have been during over the past decade. such as privacy issues and manipulation etc.

The most ignorant thing I have ever heard today, the metaverse is a scam people act like if it was a new thing for people to socialize in a video game lol people have been doing that since 2008

    Tenacious Dmitchell says:

I applaud the Facebook mega world coming to an end as I predicted long ago.😊

Haha so what will this mean for the actual social media platforms though? Can we still use them?

    jardinbleu7 says:

Metaverse is a huge strategic mistake. At this point, Zuckerberg should be put aside for another CEO, preferably from outside the company.

    Phil Fletcher says:

I think this is just the start of the end for Facebook. Once the mindset sets in that a product is no longer trendy it’s had it. I’m 75 and even I won’t use Facebook anymore. It’s boring and not very user friendly. I hated it 10 years ago and that detestation has never gone away. 😁😁😁
