Before the rain arrived, India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first.

Bowlers Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson were left out of England’s 15-man squad.

A second and final warm-up will take place against Bangladesh on Monday, before they begin their title defence against New Zealand on Thursday (09:30 BST).

England’s final chance to get fast bowler Mark Wood and leg-spinner Adil Rashid some match action will come on Monday. The pair have not played since 31 July and 8 September, respectively.

Following a tie in the 2019 final at Lord’s, England won on boundary countback to win the 50-over title.

Thiruvananthapuram’s other warm-up game between Australia and the Netherlands was also abandoned on Saturday.

Rain and a wet outfield delayed the start, reducing the game to 23 overs.

Having won the toss, Australia posted 166-7 after Smith was promoted to open the batting.

Starc then took a hat-trick – across the last two balls of the first over and the first of the third over – but the rain returned after 14.2 overs to leave the Netherlands at 84-6.

Since sides can use their full 15-man squads for warm-up games, Starc’s hat-trick will not be officially registered.
