Cricket World Cup 2023 Quinton de Kock hits 174 in Mumbai
A blistering batting display by Quinton de Kock helped South Africa beat Bangladesh by 149 runs in Mumbai.
With his third century of this World Cup and the highest score of the tournament so far, De Kock led the Proteas to 382-5 victory.
A similarly destructive 90 from 49 balls followed Heinrich Klaasen’s century against England.
In reply, Bangladesh were all out for 233 despite Mahmudullah’s heroic century.
When South Africa chose to bat first, they were reduced to 36-2 in the powerplay but a 131-run partnership between De Kock and Aiden Markram, who made 60, put them back in charge.
Having taken 101 balls to reach his 20th one-day international century, De Kock went into overdrive once he reached three figures, peppering the boundary to add 74 runs from 39 deliveries.
As he departed, Klaasen was well set and happily took over, hitting eight sixes in his latest power-hitting masterclass, and Miller ended the innings with an unbeaten 15-ball 34.
Bangladesh soon found themselves in trouble due to the pressure of chasing a World Cup record.
A two-wicket haul for Marco Jansen started the top-order collapse before Lizaad Williams, Gerald Coetzee and Kagiso Rabada dismissed Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das respectively to leave the Tigers at 58-5.
While Mahmudullah showed great resolve and shepherded the lower order well, Bangladesh was spared the ignominy of a record World Cup defeat at one point.
