Cricket World Cup 2023 Glenn Maxwell hits fastest century
In Delhi, Australia’s Glenn Maxwell scored the fastest men’s World Cup century in 40 balls to defeat the Netherlands by a record margin.
Right-hander beat Aiden Markram’s record of 49 balls set 18 days ago for South Africa against Sri Lanka.
In response, the Netherlands were bowled out for 90, losing by 309 runs.
As Australia posted 399-8, with Bas de Leede conceding an ODI record 115 runs, David Warner also made his second century of the tournament.
ODI history records Maxwell’s innings as the fourth fastest and Australia’s fastest, surpassing his 51-ball century against Sri Lanka in the 2015 World Cup.
A 31-ball century by AB de Villiers against West Indies in 2015 holds the record for the fastest century.
It was also Australia’s biggest win in ODIs, beating Afghanistan’s 275-run defeat at the 2015 World Cup.
Now that Australia has won three consecutive games after starting with three losses, they are beginning to consolidate their place in the top four, as this huge victory has helped boost their run rate.
Netherlands is now bottom of the 10-team table after winning only once against South Africa last Tuesday.
