On Tuesday, the 338-member House chose Fergus – the first black man to hold the position.

The role was an “honor” for him.

After inviting a Ukrainian soldier who fought for a Nazi unit to the parliament, the former Speaker resigned.

Rota said he was unaware of the veteran’s Nazi past.

On Tuesday, seven candidates ran for his replacement.

Fergus began his remarks by encouraging his colleagues to treat each other with respect in the House, a place he described as “passionate debate”.

Politics is a noble profession, he said.

According to Justin Trudeau, his election “should inspire young Canadians who want to get involved in politics”.

Some Conservative members opposed his nomination. According to MP Michelle Rempel Garner of Calgary, an ethics violation last year – in which he was found to have inappropriately written a letter of support for a French-speaking broadcaster – made him ineligible for office.
