Taking Reece Topley’s place as a replacement for the fast bowler, England has added Durham’s Brydon Carse to their World Cup squad.

In Saturday’s defeat by South Africa in Mumbai, India, left-arm seamer Topley broke a finger and was ruled out of the tournament.

The 28-year-old has taken 14 wickets in 12 one-day internationals, including last month’s match against Ireland.

Ahead of the Ireland series, he took four wickets in three T20 matches against New Zealand.

On Monday, Joe Root said that Brydon is a brilliant all-rounder.

In addition to scoring some handy runs, he’s dynamic in the field and he has a unique wicket-taking ability. He has that Stokes quality.”

He has a big personality and a great character, so he makes a great addition.”

With eight wickets in three matches, Topley was England’s top wicket-taker at the World Cup.

Before the tournament, Carse was on standby in case of injury, but his call-up still leaves England with offensive problems.

Because he is likely to fly to India on Tuesday, he is unlikely to be ready for England’s next match against Sri Lanka.

During Topley’s three matches, he had taken the new ball, but Carse bowls primarily outside the first powerplay.

Despite starting the tournament as England’s first-choice new-ball bowler, Chris Woakes was dropped for the game against the Proteas due to poor form.

Defending champions England will likely have to win all five of their remaining games to qualify for the semifinals after losing their first three games.
