“Barbie” is now on track to become the most successful movie at the domestic box office this year, overtaking “Super Mario Bros.”

Barbie has made $572.3 million at the American box office as of Wednesday, edging closer to Mario’s $574.2 million domestic haul.

Barbie, based on the iconic doll, is likely to snatch the title from the video game adaptation, “Super Mario Bros.” on Thursday.

“Barbie” will likely reach the record-breaking title in 35 days after its release, while it took Mario, Luigi, and the gang 138 days to cross the $574.2 million mark.

Several records have been broken since “Barbie” premiered on July 21. It was the biggest opening weekend of the year and the biggest debut for a female director ever with $155 million domestically. In the weeks that followed, it became Discovery’s highest-grossing domestic release, surpassing “The Dark Knight,” which held the title previously.

Earlier this year, “Barbie” crossed the $1 billion mark globally, reaching the $1.2 billion mark less than three weeks earlier — a feat only achieved by about 50 films in history, adjusted for inflation, according to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. In addition, it made Greta Gerwig the highest-grossing woman director in history.

The movie’s reign at the top of the box office came to an end last weekend, when “Blue Beetle” unseated “Barbie.” The DC superhero film grossed an estimated $25.4 million, while “Barbie” dipped to second place with $21.5 million, according to studio estimates.
