According to reports, Apple will invest $1 billion a year in developing generative artificial intelligence products.

The spending comes as the company catches up to some competitors who have already launched new AI products and features, including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.

While Apple uses AI in its products, it hasn’t launched a generative AI product like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google Bard. Instead, Apple uses its AI for things like improving photos and autocorrecting text.

As of now, Apple has built its own large language model framework, known as Ajax, as well as a rumored chatbot, known internally as Apple GPT. The company has not yet incorporated either into its products.

It is reportedly working on integrating AI into Siri, Messages, and Apple Music. Apple would use AI to create auto-generated playlists like Spotify does through its partnership with OpenAI. Reports indicate that Apple is also exploring the use of AI in Xcode to assist app developers.

There are three Apple executives leading the AI initiatives: John Giannandrea, SVP of machine learning and AI strategy; Craig Federighi, SVP of software engineering; and Eddy Cue, head of services.
