According to a filing Wednesday in a Tennessee federal court, Universal Music is suing artificial intelligence startup Anthropic over “systematic and widespread infringement of their copyrighted song lyrics.”

According to the lawsuit, Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude generates an almost identical copy of Katy Perry’s song “Roar” lyrics when a user asks about its lyrics, violating Concord’s copyright rights. Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” was also cited as an example of Anthropic’s alleged copyright infringement, since Universal owns the song’s lyrics.

Anthropic illegally copies and distributes vast amounts of copyrighted works in the process of building and operating AI models, the lawsuit stated, adding, “AI companies must obey the law in the same way that other technology developers have, from the printing press to the copy machine to the web crawler.”

There were also names of other music publishers as plaintiffs, such as Concord and ABKCO.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers and funded by Google, Salesforce, and Zoom. A total of $750 million has been raised in two funding rounds since March and the company is valued at $4.1 billion.

In May, Anthropic was one of four companies invited to the White House to discuss responsible AI development with Vice President Kamala Harris. The other three companies were Alphabet parent Alphabet, Microsoft, and Microsoft-backed OpenAI.

The latest version of Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude 2, can summarize up to 75,000 words – roughly the length of a 300-page book – in comparison to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which can handle 3,000 words.

Anthropic’s co-founder and president Daniela Amodei said, “We have focused on businesses and on making Claude as safe as possible.”
