AI regulations to protect jobs rise in Europe after ChatGPT

A majority of Europeans want government restrictions on artificial intelligence to mitigate the impacts of the technology on job security, according to a major new study from Spain’s IE University.

Among 3,000 Europeans, 68% want their governments to enact rules to protect jobs from rising levels of automation caused by artificial intelligence.

As a result, the number of people who responded in the same way to a similar study conducted by IE University in 2022 has increased by 18%. According to IE University’s study last year, 58% of respondents said AI should be regulated.

IE University’s Center for the Governance of Change, an applied-research institution dedicated to enhancing innovation understanding, anticipation, and management, produced this report.

Estonia is the only country in Europe where this view decreased – by 23% – from last year. There are only 35% of Estonians who want the government to impose limits on artificial intelligence.

In general, though, the majority of Europeans support government regulation of AI to prevent job losses.

Sidhu noted that public sentiment towards regulation of AI has been increasing recently as generative AI products like ChatGPT and others have been released.

As governments around the world consider regulation of AI algorithms, this announcement comes at a crucial time.
