There has been another earthquake in western Afghanistan just days after two large quakes killed more than 1,000 people in the same region.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck near Herat, 28km (17 miles) north of the city, at around 5:10 local time (00:40 GMT).

There were more than 100 injuries and hospitalizations, according to health officials.

There is still no clear picture of the wider impact of Saturday’s disaster, but many people were sleeping in the open after their homes were destroyed.

There is also a shortage of blankets, food, and other supplies, according to aid agencies.

Some houses still stand in central Herat, where an eyewitness said she woke up screaming and fled.

Because I hadn’t slept in days, I was in the deepest sleep.

Having run barefoot to the outskirts of the city where many have been sleeping in tents since the first earthquake, she said, “I have never felt so close to death.”.

Zindajan, a rural district 40 kilometers from Herat, was struck by the earthquake on Saturday morning.

Rubble is seen in images from the villages, where entire houses were too fragile to withstand the tremors.

Since it lies at the junction of the Eurasian and Indian plates, Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes – especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range.
