A deputy an insider or Trump The race for US House Speaker

Republicans are also rumored to be running, and Donald Trump has even been floated as a candidate.

Technically, anyone in the US can be the Speaker.

The Republican Party plans to hold a speaker candidate forum next Tuesday, followed by a vote the next day. Now one of the most powerful Republicans in Congress, Mr Jordan was once a thorn in his party’s side.

As chairman of the influential House Judiciary Committee and a key member of the House Oversight Committee, the Ohio firebrand is currently serving his ninth term.

Through that position, he led the impeachment inquiry into President Biden, as well as other aggressive investigations into the administration.

Jordan, 59, wasn’t always inside Washington’s inner sanctum.

Known for his bomb-throwing rhetoric and divisive tactics, the staunch conservative has angered Republicans in the past.

An ex-Republican Speaker called him a “legislative terrorist” for founding the House Freedom Caucus in 2015.

It was during the Trump years, however, that Mr Jordan gained popularity within the Republican voter base as one of the president’s most ardent defenders. He ran for Speaker in 2018 and was also nominated earlier this year, but on Tuesday, he vigorously defended Mr McCarthy.

According to Mr Jordan, we are at a critical crossroad in the history of our nation.

It is important that we focus on the changes that improve the country and unite to offer real solutions. But whatever we do, we must do it together as a conference as well.”
