Among five changes to the squad that lost 3-0 to Bangladesh in March, Surrey fast bowler Gus Atkinson has been selected for the four-match series.

According to Buttler, the T20 squad was selected with the intention of looking at a few other players in the future.

On Wednesday, the first match of the series begins at 18:00 BST at Chester-le-Street.

Buttler added, “We want to broaden the talent pool and expose people to international cricket.”

There are four members of England’s Ashes squad in the squad – all-rounder Moeen Ali, batters Harry Brook and Ben Duckett, and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

He was the third highest run-scorer in The Hundred, which ended on Sunday. Brook will not play in the ODI series against New Zealand next month.

As a Northern Supercharger, he scored 238 runs at an average of 47.6 behind only Buttler and Finn Allen.

Luke Wood, a left-arm pace bowler for Lancashire with only two T20 caps, is also included. ODI quick Mark Wood is selected solely for the Test series.
