A court has ruled that an 18-year-old Oxford student was a member of an international cyber-crime gang that hacked major tech companies.

Arion Kurtaj was a key member of the Lapsus$ hacking group that targeted Uber, Nvidia, and Rockstar Games.

While on bail in a Travelodge hotel, Kurtaj leaked clips of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Lapsus$ shocked the cyber security world in 2021 and 2022 with its audacious attacks.

Psychiatrists deemed Kurtaj unfit to stand trial, so he did not testify in court.

Rather than determining whether he intended to commit a crime, the jury was asked to determine whether he committed the acts alleged.

As a result of his age, we are unable to identify another 17-year-old who was convicted for his involvement with the Lapsus$ gang.

In court, the UK and Brazil were described as “digital bandits”.

A gang, mostly teenagers, accessed multinational corporations including Microsoft, the technology giant, and digital banking company Revolut using con-man-like tricks and computer hacking.

During their spree, the hackers celebrated their crimes publicly and taunted victims on Telegram, a social network app.

Seven weeks of trial were held at Southwark Crown Court in London.
