82-year-old co-founder of Adobe John Warnock has passed away, Adobe announced on Sunday.

With Charles Geschke’s help, Warnock founded Adobe in 1982 and transformed it into a software powerhouse that became the backbone of the internet.

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen wrote to employees that John’s brilliance and technology innovations changed the world. “It is a sad day for the Adobe community and the industry for which he has been an inspiration for a long time.”

The PostScript programming language was developed by Warnock and Geschke, which helped usher in the desktop publishing revolution.

According to the company, Warnock’s “vision and passion enabled Adobe to deliver groundbreaking innovations such as Illustrator, the ubiquitous PDF file format, Acrobat, Photoshop and Premiere Pro, defining the desktop era and enabling millions of people to express their creativity and opportunities.”

As Narayen put it, Warnock’s “indomitable spirit, passion, and belief in building a company with strong values has touched all of us at Adobe.”

As Adobe’s CEO until 2000, Warnock also served as the company’s chairman until 2017. He was also a member of the board until his death.

President Barack Obama awarded him the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2009, as well as the Marconi Prize for technological contributions to information science.

Salt Lake City native Warnock holds several degrees from the University of Utah, including a doctorate in electrical engineering for computer science, a master’s degree in mathematics, and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and philosophy.

It was reported in a 2013 profile that his high school counselor told him he had no chance of becoming an engineer because he “didn’t have a head for math” and failed ninth-grade algebra.

“I had an amazing teacher in high school who completely changed my life,” Warnock said. “He was really good at getting you to love mathematics.”

It was not revealed what caused the death. The three children and wife of Warnock survive him.
