CWC 23 Australia stun hosts India to win sixth title in Ahmedabad as Travis Head hits century in CWC 2023 Final

The 100,000-strong home crowd was quieted when Australia dismiss the previously unbeaten opposition for 240 before Travis Head scored a sensational century.

Australia were reduced to 47-3 as India hit back in an electric new-ball spell after their bowlers took advantage of a slow pitch.

As Indian hope drifted away from the largest cricket stadium in the world, Head and Marnus Labuschagne calmly weathered the storm with a stand of 192.

In the end, Head was caught for 137 from 120 balls with just two runs needed, but Maxwell flogged the winning runs a ball later while Labuschagne ended up 58 not out from 110 balls in the CWC 2023 Final.

As a result of the superb victory, Australia extends its record as the most successful side in 50-over World Cup history.

The win caps a six-month period during which they beat India to win the World Test Championship and retained the Ashes in England.

As India fell at the final hurdle of their quest for a first white-ball title since 2011 – a feat that appeared unstoppable throughout the semi-final and group stages – they were left crestfallen.

Australia won the World Cup in a surprising and comfortable manner, with Head producing one of the great knocks of the tournament.

As 29-year-old Head reached his century, some in the large stands had made their exit, and seamer Mohammed Siraj was in tears.

Similar to when they won the 2021 Twenty20 World Cup, Australia were contenders when the tournament began without being tipped to go all the way.

At the end, their players, including England’s old foes David Warner and Steve Smith, charged onto the field in celebration.
