A Google spokesperson said Tuesday the company is disabling live traffic conditions on its Maps and Waze apps in Israel and Gaza. Israel is widely expected to invade Gaza on the ground as a result of the move.

According to a Google spokesperson, “As we have done previously in conflict-related situations and in response to the evolving situation in the region, we have temporarily disabled the ability to view live traffic conditions and busyness information out of consideration for the safety of local communities.” Routes and ETAs will still be calculated based on current traffic conditions for anyone navigating to a specific location.”

Google is working with local authorities during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, the spokesperson said.

In response to a question about whether the restriction was requested, the Israel Defense Forces did not immediately respond.

Reports indicate that Google also disabled live traffic data on Maps in Ukraine at the start of the Russia-Ukraine War last year
